AMFA Mechanics and Northwest Airlines Reach Tentative Agreement.

 has released to its members a summary of details agreed to in the Tentative Agreement reached with Northwest Airlines. The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) is an independent union that represents aircraft maintenance employees of commercial airlines in the United States. AMFA is committed to the principles of craft unionism, in that it seeks to represent only airline mechanics and  reached a tentative agreement with Northwest Airlines early Monday morning, avoiding threat of a strike and ending a long process of negotiation.

AMFA is currently working with Northwest Airlines to print and distribute details of the proposal to union members. "We hope to have the voting on this contract complete by early to mid-May," said Steve Lanier, AMFA National Secretary.

 details of the agreement released by AMFA this afternoon:

-- Technicians and higher will receive a base rate increase of 24.4% at the date of signing plus a one-time pay adjustment of $3,750

-- Cleaners and custodians will receive a base rate increase of 13 percent at the date of signing plus a one-time pay adjustment of $1,875

-- All AMFA union employees will receive a 3 percent increase during each of the first two years after signing and receive a 4 percent increase the third year

-- Retroactive Having reference to things that happened in the past, prior to the occurrence of the act in question.

A retroactive or retrospective law is one that takes away or impairs vested rights acquired under existing laws, creates new obligations, imposes new duties, or attaches a
 pay from October, 1996 to May 1 of 3 1/2 percent is also part of the Tentative Agreement
