Hoping to foil counterfeiters, American Express American Express (NYSE: AXP), sometimes known as "AmEx" or "Amex", is a diversified global financial services company, headquartered in New York City. The company is best known for its credit card, charge card and traveler's cheque businesses.  has introduced redesigned traveler's checks it says are safer and easier for merchants to verify. The new checks, in denominations of $50, $100, $500 and $1,000, are on sale in the United States and will be available in other countries in September.

``We've been especially concerned by the recent improvement in laser printing, which has given criminals so much better printing equipment,'' Christine Levite, director of public affairs for American Express, said. While there has been a modest increase in counterfeiting, she added, ``it is an old problem.'' The company, which sold $26 billion in traveler's checks in 1996, declined to provide details of the cost of counterfeit traveler's checks.

The main feature of the new checks is a series of printed instructions that the company said would help merchants confirm their authenticity. They include a reminder to watch the endorsement, compare signatures and view the watermark watermark: see paper.
