 AMERITECH SELECTS SIEMENS STROMBERG-CARLSON
AS PACKET SWITCHING BACKBONE NETWORK SUPPLIER
BOCA RATON, Fla., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Siemens Stromberg-Carlson today announced it has reached an agreement with Ameritech to provide its EWSP packet switching systems to provide packet backbone interconnect throughout the five-state Ameritech region.
Plans call for at least one EWSP network node to be installed in each Ameritech Bell company local access and transport area (LATA) to link Ameritech's ISDN central office switches for high-speed transport of data between locations. Typical uses for packet switching networks include credit card verification, automatic teller machine (ATM) transactions, and data transfers between corporate local-area networks (LANs).
The systems will be deployed over the next 10 years, allowing the network to grow as demand for ISDN services expands in Ameritech's Bell companies serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
The EWSP is a high-performance packet switching platform operating at speeds of up to 40,000 packets per second. Based on a multi- processor platform, the EWSP offers easy expansion and high reliability, and can connect central office switches from a variety of manufacturers.
"This contract is a significant step forward in our relationship with Ameritech," said Daryl Eigen, Siemens Stromberg-Carlson vice president for the Ameritech Region. "Ameritech has purchased the EWSD (digital), EWSM (broadband) and EWSP (packet) switching systems from Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. Together these systems provide a complete range of data and voice services to meet customers' needs now, and into the future."
Ameritech is the Chicago-based parent of Bell companies serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as several other information-related subsidiaries, both foreign and domestic, providing mobile communications, directory publishing, audiotex services, systems integration, lease financing and voice messaging. Its 1991 revenues were $10.8 billion.
Siemens Stromberg-Carlson provides telephone operating companies with advanced, high-quality public telecommunications networks. The company designs, develops and manufactures central office digital switching systems, packet switching systems and transmission equipment. Based in Boca Raton, the company has manufacturing and other functional groups in Lake Mary, Fla., and Albuquerque, N.M. Siemens Stromberg- Carlson is the third-largest equipment supplier to the U.S. public telecommunications networks.
