AMERITECH MOBILE ANNOUNCES DIGITAL PLANS
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Ameritech Mobile announced today that it will conduct trials of two digital cellular technologies to determine which technology customers prefer. The company welcomed last Thursday's decision by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) to immediately begin development of a second standard of digital technology for customers.
According to John E. Rooney, president of Ameritech Mobile, "Digital is a customer issue rather than strictly a technology issue. We firmly believe that we must give our customers what they want: the best possible service to meet their needs now and in the future. Therefore, we are building a network platform that will allow us to provide any of several digital technologies."
Ameritech Mobile has been a leader in pursuing standards development for multiple digital options and is preparing its network platform to accommodate them.
The two technologies that Ameritech Mobile will trial are TDMA, Time Division Multiple Access and CDMA, Code Division Multiple Access. At such time that the technologies are advanced enough for effective testing purposes, Ameritech Mobile will announce details of the trials. "Thorough testing prior to choosing a technology to offer to our customers is critical," Rooney stated.
Cellular industry research indicates that digital technology can offer customers several service benefits. TDMA digital technology offers three times the capacity of current analog service, and CDMA has been shown to provide an increase of 10 to 15 times. In addition to the capacity issue, the technologies vary enough that each brings specific benefits for future growth. Both technologies offer cellular customers clearer voice transmission, the potential for additional voice and data services and increased call privacy. For CDMA, customer benefits include more features and increased call privacy.
Ameritech Mobile Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ameritech, and headquartered in Hoffman Estates, serves more than 500,000 customers in Illinois, Northwest Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and parts of Missouri.
