Health Care Company Develops Program To Raise Awareness

in the Physician Community About Domestic Abuse

Approximately two million women are abused by male partners or acquaintances each year. To increase awareness of this serious health problem, AMERIGROUP Corporation announced today that the company has established a domestic violence program to assist physicians in identifying and treating abuse victims and to help reduce cases in the communities the company serves.

The company's program includes--

-- educational programs for providers and members to assist with prevention and intervention A procedure used in a lawsuit by which the court allows a third person who was not originally a party to the suit to become a party, by joining with either the plaintiff or the defendant. .

"Most abusive Tending to deceive; practicing abuse; prone to ill-treat by coarse, insulting words or harmful acts. Using ill treatment; injurious, improper, hurtful, offensive, reproachful.  relationships do not start out violent. The relationship usually starts out romantically, sharing love and trust. In fact, many people have loving relationships for years before the abuse commences," said Lorenzo Childress, MD, chief medical officer. "With this program, we hope to educate women about the warning signs of domestic abuse and what resources are available to them to break the abuse cycle."

"One national source for victims is the National Domestic Abuse Hotline, which can be reached at 1-800-799-SAFE. The Hotline provides access to nearly 130 translators This is primarily a list of notable Western translators. Please feel free to add translators from other languages, cultures and areas of specialization. Large sublists have been split off to separate articles.  for those callers whose native language is not English. For those callers who are hearing impaired, the Hotline can be accessed through the TDD (Time Division Duplexing) A transmission method that uses only one channel for transmitting and receiving, separating them by different time slots.
