AMERIGAS PROPANE CUSTOMERS MAY QUALIFY FOR ASSISTANCE FROM FUND

AMERIGAS PROPANE CUSTOMERS MAY QUALIFY FOR ASSISTANCE FROM FUND
HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Attorney General Ernie Preate Jr. today said his office is making the initial distribution from a $250,000 energy assistance fund for low-income customers of AmeriGas Propane.
"I'm also attempting to identify other consumers who qualify for financial assistance from the fund," Preate said.
The $250,000 fund was established by AmeriGas under terms of a settlement agreement negotiated earlier this year between AmeriGas and Preate's Antitrust Section.
"The agreement resulted from a review of the propane and energy products industry initiated by my office in December 1989 following widespread supply shortages and price hikes," Preate said.
The Attorney General said $100 checks were mailed today to 153 AmeriGas customers. The checks are made payable jointly to the consumers and AmeriGas and can be used to pay AmeriGas propane bills.
Preate said current AmeriGas customers are eligible for payments from the fund if they qualified for the Department of Public Welfare's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) last winter or if they qualify this winter.
"Because of confidentiality requirements of the LIHEAP program, we're not able to get a list of customers who may be eligible for payments from the $250,000 energy assistance fund," the Attorney General said. "That's why I'm asking AmeriGas customers who receive LIHEAP assistance to contact my office as soon as possible."
He said qualified consumers should send their name and address along with documents indicating they are AmeriGas customers and LIHEAP participants to: Attorney General's Office, AmeriGas Energy Fund, 14th Floor, Strawberry Square, Harrisburg, Pa. 17120.
Preate said his office expects to make additional distributions from the energy assistance fund.
