 AMERICAS TOWER OPENS IN MANHATTAN
KG A&A OFFICIALLY UNVEILS ONE MILLION SQUARE FOOT OFFICE TOWER
NEW YORK, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 200 New York City officials, business and civic leaders joined with executives of Kumagai Gumi Co. Ltd. today for the official opening of Americas Tower, the one million square foot office tower at 1177 Avenue of the Americas, in Manhattan.
First Deputy Mayor Normal Steisel, New York State First Lady Mathilda Cuomo and New York City First Lady Joyce Dinkins, headed a list of dignitaries who heralded the opening of the office tower as a sign of the long-term vitality of the Manhattan real estate market. Kumagai Gumi President Taichiro Kumagai, and Dr. Katsuhiko Takahashi, chairman of KG A&A Corp., the Kumagai subsidiary which owns the building, led the dignitaries in the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon.
In addition, Kumagai presented city and state officials with a specially commissioned mosaic designed by internationally renowned artist Simon Verity.
Entitled "The Gorgeous Mosaic," in keeping with Mayor Dinkin's depiction of New York as a living mosaic of different peoples and cultures, the mural represents the neighborhoods and diversity of life in the City. Verity, most recently acclaimed for his work in the restoration of the Cathedral at St. John The Divine Church in Upper Manhattan, was commissioned for the project through a grant from the Kumagai Gumi Arts Foundation, made to the Church.
The 48-story Americas Tower is one of the few buildings going on- line on Manhattan during 1992. It comes equipped with some of the most advanced engineering available in modern commercial real estate design.
The edifice is of structural steel and incorporates mechanical- electrical systems which provide zoned controls capable of submetering. Designed as a multi-tenanted building, a single floor can operate after hours while saving energy throughout the structure. Additionally, the building has extra transformers and cooling towers. Floors range from 10,000 to 30,0000 square feet.
The event also marked the 10th anniversary of Kumagai Gumi development in New York, during which time it has constructed a variety of residential, hotel and commercial properties.
"While Kumagai Gumi is a Japanese company, we are truly an American developer. We have made a long-term commitment to the New York real estate community -- one which will outlast any temporary downturn in the market," said Kumagai.
"During our 10 years in New York, we have strived to produce buildings which meet the demanding requirements of New York's real estate market now and for the future," he added.
In his remarks to the assembled guests, Takahashi said, "Americas Tower is one of the city's most technologically advanced office buildings. We expect that this building will be one of the city's premier business addresses for many years to come."
Americas Tower, designed by the architectural firm of Swanke Hayden Connell and built by KM/Turner, A Joint Venture, is sheathed in a curtain wall of stone-clad granite, glass and metal, typical of traditional style of 1930's skyscrapers, or "wedding cake" structures.
