 AMERICANS SPENDING MORE VACATION TIME TOGETHER;

AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS CHEQUES FOR TWO/GALLUP POLL FINDS MAJOR SHIFT
 NEW YORK, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The move from the "Me Generation" of the 1980s to the "We Generation" of the 1990s is now being reflected in travel behavior, according to results of a just-released American Express(R) Travelers Cheques for Two/Gallup Vacationers Poll.
 Compared to the past, 39 percent of all Americans report that they spend more time together on vacations today, and over half (51 percent) say that's more time than people spent together in their parents' generation. The telephone survey was just completed among a national sample of 800 people who typically travel with one or more companions.
 More Travelers Share Vacation Spending Money
 This trend toward more sharing among American travelers is revealed most strikingly in the survey findings about how people handle their money on vacation: two-thirds (66 percent) of the respondents say that in their parents' generation only one person -- usually the man -- took care of the vacation money, but today, more than three-fourths (77 percent) say they share control. And, an almost equal number (76 percent) say that is the ideal way to go.
 People say they handle their money differently on vacation than their parents' generation mainly because there are differences in the roles and relationships of men and women today: 30 percent mention a mix of reasons like changing times, more freedom and equality, and less conservatism. Other key reasons include the fact that the role of the man as head of the household has shifted (21 percent), that men and women are now sharing control (17 percent), that they have more money (16 percent), and that women have become more independent (11 percent).
 "These new attitudes about sharing control of the funds on vacation reflect the way money is now handled generally in our society," according to R. Craig Hoenshell, president, American Express Travelers Cheque Group. "Previous consumer research showed us there was a greater need for shared travel funds than in the past, which is one of the key reasons we launched Travelers Cheques for Two earlier this season."
 Travelers Cheques for Two are the first and only travelers cheques that allow two travel companions to sign and use the same set of Cheques. They protect both vacationers, whether they're together, temporarily off on their own or accidentally separated.
 "These survey findings regarding increased sharing of time and money reflect the 1990s notion of 'cocooning' or 'nesting' as well as the trend toward increased freedom and independence in relationships between men and women," according to Gale D. Muller, senior analyst, The Gallup Organization.
 Travel Companions at Ease with Doing Things Apart
 While 88 percent of the respondents say they spend the majority of their vacation time with their travel companion, they are also more at ease with the idea of doing some vacation activities apart: two-thirds (66 percent) of the public say they spend 10 percent or more of their vacation time apart from their travel companions, and 64 percent mention at least one favorite vacation activity they typically do without their travel companion.
 "The freedom to occasionally do some things apart from travel companions mirrors the shift in psychological mindset regarding the relationships of men and women that has occurred over the past two decades," said Amy McIntosh, vice president, marketing, American Express Travelers Cheque Group.
 The most popular vacation activities that travelers enjoy apart from their companions include golf, shopping, walking for exercise, and sunbathing. Together, travel companions most enjoy fine dining, visiting historical sites, museums, and swimming.
