AMERICAN-STANDARD PRESIDENT & CEO RESPONDS TO CALIFORNIA LAWSUIT

NEW YORK, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Emmanuel A. Kampouris, president and chief executive officer of American-Standard, Inc. issued the following statement in response to today's action by the California Attorney General:
"I want to express American-Standard's agreement with the general goal of the State of California and other regions of the U.S. to reduce the quantity of lead in drinking water. Lead in water is a threat to health. It should be reduced to the lowest possible level. Period.
"American-Standard began work many years ago to eliminate any introduction of lead into drinking water from our faucets, and other plumbing fittings. We have not succeeded in eliminating it altogether, but only one other manufacturer makes fittings that may introduce less lead than ours. We are still working to get the lead content lower.
"Today, American-Standard was named, along with every fittings manufacturer doing business in California of which we are aware, in a suit for having sold fittings that exceed the lead leaching limits allegedly permitted by California state law. The suit list companies alphabetically, so we are first on the list.
"We today reaffirm our support for the goal that all fittings should be brought down to the lowest possible lead levels. We will work with the State of California to establish a safe and realistic standard, and will continue to do so, in the hope that all manufacturers will make the goal of lowest-lead fittings a personal and corporate priority.
"American-Standard is committed to providing high quality products for America's health, safety and comfort. We aim to set the standard -- in California, and everywhere we do business."
