AMERICAN SUPERCONDUCTOR REPORTS SECOND QUARTER REVENUES
WATERTOWN, Mass., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- American Superconductor Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: AMSC) today reported revenues for its second quarter, ended Sept. 30, 1992, of $783,045, with a net loss of $878,639 or 17 cents per share. For the same period the previous year, the firm posted revenues of $587,344 with a net loss of $402,074 or 14 cents per share.
For the six-month period ended Sept. 30, 1992, the firm's revenues were $1,470,775 with a net loss of $1,489,498 or 29 cents per share. Revenues for the comparable period the previous year were $1,399,203 with a net loss of $750,236 or 26 cents per share.
As previously announced, the firm's business plan calls for widening losses this year. The increased quarterly and year-to-date losses stem primarily from increased R&D efforts using funds raised in the company's initial public offering.
In addition to reported revenues, the company recorded funding of $116,824 for the second quarter and $249,673 for the six-month period ended Sept. 30, 1992, under cost-sharing agreements. The funds, for development and delivery of superconducting coils under programs with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Commerce's Advanced Technology Program, were recorded as direct offsets to ASC's R&D expenses.
"During the second quarter we announced significant results with our prototype cable conductors," said Gregory J. Yurek, president and CEO. "I am pleased with the level of engineering progress we are experiencing in this area and, overall, in the development of our superconducting products. We're continuing to track the business plan we set for ourselves, and we're meeting both the business and technical milestones we've established."
American Superconductor Corporation develops and applies high temperature superconductor technology to create compact, cost-effective electric power and magnet systems. The firm is the largest industrial effort in the world dedicated to transferring the technology to commercial applications.
