Burkman will join the company effective Feb. 3. With more than 22 years of related experience in marketing and technical development for the materials industry, Burkman will be responsible for formulating and implementing the firm's worldwide business development and marketing programs.
Most recently, Burkman was with FSI International Inc., a producer of equipment for the semiconductor manufacturing industry, based in Chaska, Minn. During that time he also served as a representative director of M.FSI Ltd., the firm's joint venture with Mitsui & Co., Ltd., based in Japan.
"Don is joining American Superconductor at an exciting time, so soon after completing our initial public offering," said Gregory J. Yurek, president and chief executive officer. "His exceptional experience in developing joint ventures, managing OEMs and international operations, and negotiating licensing agreements will be a tremendous asset to the company as we continue to grow."
Prior to joining FSI, Burkman was with Western Electric, where he held various engineering positions since 1969.
Currently, Burkman serves on the board of directors of Now Technologies, of Minneapolis; Novapure Inc., of Danbury, Conn.; and the Planner Corporation, based in Tokyo. Burkman is also former chairman of the chemical safety committee for Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).
Burkman received a master of international management and master of business administration from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. He holds a master of science in industrial safety from Central Missouri State University, and a bachelor of science in chemistry from Baker University in Kansas.
