 Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed higher today in active trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 1.37 to 403.21. Advances led declines 313 to 233 with 217 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose 3 cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 16,225,060 shares, up/down from the 17,534,160 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours volume today.
 Topping the most active list was Royal Oak Mines, unchanged at 1-9/16 on 586,600 shares, followed by Hillhaven Corporation, up 4-1/4 to 3/16 on 489,600 shares. The third most active issue, Amdahl Corporation was up 1/8 to 7-5/8 on 482,000 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 323,900 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was AUDRE Recognition Systems, down 5/16 to 4-1/2 on 112,200 shares.
 Trading in options was moderate today with 198,238 contracts changing hands as compared with 193,293 contracts traded yesterday. Both puts and calls traded higher.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the U.S. Surgical Feb. 70 series, down 3 to 1-1/4 on 2,637 contracts, followed by the U.S. Surgical Feb. 65 series, down 1-1/2 to 1/2 on 2,310 contracts. The third most active was the U.S. Surgical Apr. 70 series down 3 to 3-3/8 on 1,605 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the U.S. Surgical Feb. 80 series, up 1-3/16 to 1-7/8 on 3,904 contracts, followed by the U.S. Surgical Feb. 75 series up 2-3/8 to 3-7/8 on 3,639 contracts. The third most active was the Unisys Feb. 12 1/2 series, up 3/16 to 5/8 on 2,589 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Standard & Poor's MidCap Index: down 0.09 to 161.57. Contracts volume 2,130, with 2,065 puts and 65 calls.
 Major Market Index: down 1.59 to 340.99. Contracts volume 4,796, with 3,208 puts and 1,588 calls.
 XMI Leaps Index: down 0.16 to 34.10. Contracts volume 40, with 40 puts and 0 calls.
 Institutional Index (XII): down 1.94 to 438.00. Contracts volume 825, with 425 puts and 400 calls.
 Institutional Index (PXP): down 1.94 to 438.00. Contracts volume 365, with 125 puts and 240 calls.
