AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE DAILY REPORT

 NEW YORK, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed lower today in very active trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed down .83 to 396.41. Declines led advances 295 to 248 with 224 issues unchanged. The average price per share fell two cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 15,528,855 shares, up from the 13,626,170 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours trading activity today.
 Topping the most active list was Charter Medical Corporation, up 7/8 to 10-1/8 on 656,200 shares, followed by Exploration Co. of Louisiana, unchanged at 1-1/8 on 549,200 shares. The third most active issue, Interdigital Communications was up 1/8 to 10-5/8 on 543,500 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 1,119,600 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was Audre Recognition Systems, up 5/8 to 5 on 767,000 shares.
 Trading in options was moderate today with 197,515 contracts changing hands as compared with 160,918 contracts traded yesterday. Puts were higher as calls traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the Digital Equipment Jan 35 Series, up 1/4 to 1 on 1,784 contracts, followed by the Seagate Technology Jan 20 series, up 5/8 to 1-1/8 on 1,417 contracts. The third most active was the Midcap Index Feb 155 series down 7/16 to 1-5/8 on 1,397 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. Jan 20 Series, down 1/4 to 1/16 on 5,500 contracts, followed by the Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. Feb 20 series down 1/16 to 7/16 on 5,490 contracts. The third most active was the Seagate Technologies Jan 20 series, down 7/8 to 1 on 2,946 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Standard & Poor's MidCap Index: down .22 to 158.02. Contracts volume 2,678, with 2,297 puts and 381 calls.
 Major Market Index: up .92 to 342.54. Contracts volume 6,120, with 3,141 puts and 2,979 calls.
