 NEW YORK, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed lower today in active trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed down 1.73 to 380.99. Declines led advances 293 to 183 with 235 issues unchanged. The average price per share fell five cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 12,422,490 shares, up from the 10,591,715 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours activity reported.
 Topping the most active list was Hillhaven Corp., up 1/4 to 2-1/2 on 828,000 shares, followed by Citizens First Bancorp, up 1/8 to 3 on 677,600 shares. The third most active issue, U.S. Bioscience was down 1/4 to 9-1/8 on 519,900 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 133,400 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was AUDRE Recognition Systems, Inc., down 1/16 to 3-1/8 on 26,800 shares.
 Trading in options was light today with 135,215 contracts changing hands as compared with 122,728 contracts traded yesterday. Puts were higher as calls traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the American Express October 25 series, up 1/2 to 3-1/4 on 2,806 contracts, followed by the Phillip Morris October 85 series, up 3/16 to 1-1/8 on 2,387 contracts. The third most active was the Nabisco March 10 series up 1/16 to 1-3/8 on 2,003 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the U.S. Surgical October 65 series, down 1/16 to 2-5/8 on 1,638 contracts, followed by the Phillip Morris October 90 series down 1/16 to 5/16 on 1,317 contracts. The third most active was the Wells Fargo November 65 series, up 1/2 to 5 on 1,200 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Standard & Poor's MidCap Index: down 1.02 to 145.47. Contracts volume 4,602, with 3,000 puts and 1,602 calls.
 Major Market Index: down 4.21 to 352.17. Contracts volume 7,619, with 5,376 puts and 2,243 calls.
 XMI Leaps Index: down .42 to 35.22. Contracts volume 135, with 35 puts and 100 calls.
