 NEW YORK, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in moderate trading. The Amex Market Value Index gained 0.34 to 385.50. Advancing issues led decliners 271 to 223 with 241 issues unchanged in price. The average price per share rose one cent.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 13,122,480 shares, down from the 13,748,475 shares traded yesterday. There was no after-hours activity reported.
 Topping the most active list was Amdahl, down 1/8 to 9-3/8 on 1,243,300 shares, followed by U.S. Bioscience, down 1/4 to 10-1/8 on 678,100 shares. The third most active issue, Citizens First Bancorp climbed 3/16 to 3 on 538,000 shares.

 Today's cumulative volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 216,800 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was Intertel Communications, Inc., up 1/16 to 1 on 79,800 shares.
 Trading in options was very heavy today with 256,019 contracts changing hands as compared with 194,324 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were generally higher as puts traded mostly lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the U.S. Surgical September 65 series, up 1-1/16 to 2 on 5,817 contracts, followed by the U.S. Surgical October 65 series, up 7/8 to 5 on 5,352 contracts. The third most active was the U.S. Surgical October 70 series up 1-1/2 to 8-1/2 on 3,115 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Phillip Morris September 85 series, up 1/8 to 3/4 on 7,347 contracts, followed by the U.S. Surgical September 65 series down 1-3/16 to 1/16 on 4,021 contracts. The third most active was the Phillip Morris October 85 series, up 1/4 to 2-1/4 on 3,962 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Standard & Poor's MidCap Index: down .03 to 146.43. Contracts volume 8,120, with 6,027 puts and 2,093 calls.
 Major Market Index: up 2.55 to 357.22. Contracts volume 16,371, with 6,804 puts and 9,567 calls.
 XMI Leaps Index: up .25 to 35.72. Contracts volume 165, with 65 puts and 100 calls.
 Institutional Index: up 3.15 to 440.46. Contracts volume 13,367, with 4,685 puts and 8,682 calls.

 Prices on the American Stock Exchange closed lower this week in active trading. The Amex Market Value Index fell 0.95 for the week to 385.50. The Market Value Index reached its intraday high of 390.19 on Monday and slipped to its intraday low of 384.26 on Wednesday. The average price per share fell 0.98 cents this week.
 Regular session stock volume for the week totaled 70,973,240 shares, up from the volume of 40,982,355 shares traded last week in just four sessions.
 Options trading was heavy this week as 1,000,335 contracts changed hands, compared with 627,845 contracts traded in last week's four sessions.
