 NEW YORK, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices on the American Stock


Exchange closed higher today in very active trading. The Amex Market Value Index closed up 5.04 to 385.94. Advances led declines 333 to 249 with 197 issues unchanged. The average price per share rose 14 cents.
 Stock volume for the regular session totaled 15,494,001 shares, down from the 16,035,160 shares traded yesterday. After-hours volume totaled 3,100 shares, bringing the cumulative volume for today to 15,497,200 shares.
 Topping the most active list was U.S. Banknote Corp., up 1/2 to 6-7/8 on 1,006,500 shares, followed by Paine Webber Put Warrants, down 3/8 to 15 on 793,100 shares. The third most active issue, Fruit of the Loom was up 2 to 35-1/2 on 442,000 shares.

 Today's volume in the Emerging Company Marketplace (ECM) totaled 255,700 shares. The most actively traded stock on the ECM was Intertel Communications, unchanged at 1-1/2 on 39,700 shares.
 Trading in options was light today with 184,553 contracts changing hands as compared with 234,602 contracts traded yesterday. Calls were higher as puts traded lower.
 Topping the most active list in puts was the MidCap May 145 series, down 3-1/4 to 3-3/4 on 2,611 contracts, followed by the MidCap Apr. 145 series, down 4-1/16 to 1-15/16 on 2,346 contracts. The third most active was the Major Market Index Apr. 340 series down 1-1/2 to 1-1/8 on 2,327 contracts.
 Topping the most active list in calls was the Digital Equipment Apr. 50 series, down 3-1/4 to 5/8 on 2,645 contracts, followed by the Disney Apr. 150 series up 1/2 to 3-1/2 on 2,366 contracts. The third most active was the Major Market Index Apr. 345 series, up 2-1/8 to 4-1/8 on 1,984 contracts.
 AMEX Index Options closed as follows:
 Standard & Poor's MidCap Index: up 3.27 to 142.69. Contracts volume 16,369, with 11,902 puts and 4,467 calls.
 Major Market Index: up 4.35 to 345.38. Contracts volume 12,391, with 7,610 puts and 4,781 calls.
 Capped Major Market Index: up 4.35 to 345.38. Contracts volume 0, with 0 puts and 0 calls.
 XMI Leaps Index: up .44 to 34.54. Contracts volume 623, with 473 puts and 150 calls.
