AMERICAN POWER CONVERSION, CITY OF PROVIDENCE
SIGN LETTER OF INTENT FOR NEW MANUFACTURING PLANT
PROVIDENCE, R.I., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (NASDAQ: APCC) has signed a letter of intent with the City of Providence to construct a new manufacturing plant in the Port of Providence. The planned 100,000 sq. ft. "APC International Service and Support Center" will be constructed on approximately seven acres at the site of the former Brewster's Lumber Yard.
"We are making a strong commitment to the City of Providence to expand our business locally," said Rodger Dowdell, Jr., president, CEO and chairman of APC.
"We had considered expansion sites throughout the United States and the world," said Dowdell. "In large part due to the Mayor's efforts and incentives to help our business grow in Rhode Island, we have opted to establish the APC ISSC in Providence."
As part of the letter of intent, the City of Providence has agreed to provide a $2.1 million grant for machinery and equipment. According to Edward Machala, APC vice-president of operations, the new facility may require a total of $5 million for plant and equipment, and will bring up to 300 jobs.
"In the past year, APC has doubled the size of our manufacturing plant in West Kingston and hired more than 200 new employees," said Machala. "As planned, it appears the new site and acreage will support 450-500 employees, although the planned site provides ample potential for expansion."
"These will be incremental jobs, in addition to the employees at our West Kingston facility," said Machala.
"APC is proving that an American company can be successful manufacturing in America and exporting to all corners of the globe," said Dowdell. "We appreciate the City's efforts and commitment to the building of APC's world-class organization."
