AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS; SPICE GIRLS TAKE HOME 3 TROPHIES.

Byline: Fred Shuster Daily News Staff Writer

Pop fans got what they really, really wanted Monday when girl power in the shape of the Spice Girls The Spice Girls are an English all-female pop group, formed in London in 1994. The Spice Girls, consisting of: Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown, and Victoria Beckham signed to Virgin Records and released their debut single, "Wannabe", in 1996.  took top pop-rock honors at the American Music Awards.

The lively British singing sensation, whose movie was an unexpected box office smash over the weekend, won three trophies for favorite band, album and new artist. The group was rehearsing for a tour and did not attend the three-hour televised ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium The Shrine Auditorium is a landmark large-event venue in Los Angeles, California, USA. It is also the headquarters of the Al Malaikah Temple, a division of the Shriners.  downtown.

Urban r&b producer-singer Babyface was named favorite male artist in both the pop-rock and r&b categories.

Country music favorite George Strait George Harvey Strait, (born May 18, 1952), is an American country music singer. The native Texan is known for his honky tonk country western sound. Strait is sometimes referred to as the "King of Country" and some critics call Strait a living legend (Bego, 2001).  got the male artist and favorite album nods.

In the 25th annual event's most moving moment, Frank Sinatra's daughter, Nancy, accepted a special merit award for her father, who recently turned 82 years old. The younger Sinatra tearfully told the crowd that before she left the house, her father had told her to ``give all the fans a hug for me because they made me possible.''

Nancy Sinatra Nancy Sandra Sinatra (born June 8, 1940, in Jersey City, New Jersey) is an American singer and actress. She is the daughter of popular singer Frank Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy Barbato, and remains best known for her 1966 signature hit "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'".  added, ``so consider yourself hugged by the Chairman of the Board.''

Backstage, Sinatra said her father was in good health after he underwent a physical examination over the weekend.

``He got good reports and they sent him home,'' she told reporters. ``His spirits are great and so is his appetite.''

Sinatra alluded to the years when her famous father's personal life drew worldwide press speculation, ``not unlike what the president is going through now.''

The TV special included live performances from Puff Daddy, Mariah Carey, Garth Brooks and Matchbox 20.

It was all about hype in the press tent - movies, upcoming TV shows, restaurants, clothing lines and sometimes even music.

, voted favorite Latin artist, was nominated against his son, Enrique. He joked that before he cuts a new record these days, ``I ask my son what kind of record he's doing so as not to compete with him.''

Asked how he would celebrate his win Monday night, the Latin heartthrob replied: ``I will make love with my ex-wife.''

That might be news to his ex-wife.

Sometimes, the awards hardly reflected the current popularity of an artist. Songbird songbird

Celine Dion, for example, whose new album has been near the top of the pop charts for more than two months, got the nod for favorite female pop-rock artist but was shut out in other categories.

The stars were for the most part conservatively dressed for the event, which is based upon polls of record buyers. Next month's Grammy Awards Grammy Awards
