refuses to give up his love for baseball or life. He has experienced a year that would have shattered the confidence of most 18-year-olds. Not him.

Even after his Panorama City Legion team lost a first-place showdown to Valley North 11-3 on Tuesday night at Chatsworth High, Wilson remains positive.

Just think what he's gone through. In September, he was wounded by two shotgun blasts fired by his father. He made a surprisingly speedy recovery to rejoin the Cal State Northridge baseball team in January. A redshirt freshman season ended with the news that the baseball program would be dropped.

``I'd say by far it has been the toughest year of my life,'' Wilson said.

Wilson has spent the summer playing in a college baseball College baseball is baseball as played on the intercollegiate level at institutions of higher education, predominantly in the United States.  while searching for a new college. He leads the league with six home runs. Tuesday's game was only Wilson's fourth appearance for Panorama City (10-4-1).

The battle for first place never panned out as Valley North (12-3) jumped ahead 7-0 after the first inning. The hitting stars for Valley North were catcher Micah Berger, who had a three-run homer, and third baseman third baseman

Pitcher Ismael Marin started for Valley North and pitched two shutout innings before he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Victor Hall. The ball struck Marin on the top of his pitching hand and forced him out of the game. He suffered a possible fractured finger.

Before the game, the two teams took a moment of silence in memory of 17-year-old Julius Riofrir, a Glendale baseball player who died after being struck in the head during a practice Sunday.

``As you see, nothing will put him down,'' Panorama City coach Scott Smith said. ``He's a special kid.''

Wilson said the dropping of Northridge's baseball program was a discouraging.

``I'm bitter more at president (Blenda) Wilson than the rest of the school,'' he said. ``(Coach Mike) Batesole has been like a dad to me. It's real sad I won't be able to play the next four years for him.''

Wilson, however, isn't giving up. ``I have to stay positive, stay optimistic,'' he said.
