Newhall-Saugus coach Pat Eggleston had to do without seven regular starters.

``Everybody was playing out of position,'' he said. ``You name it, they were playing it.''

``We don't use those guys very often anyway,'' dead-panned Eggleston. ``This sort of thing is common, but this is the worst I've seen all at the same time.''

With only 10 players, Newhall-Saugus (15-5) managed to beat Valencia (13-7) 10-6 in a pivotal game for first place in their division.

Saugus: Brent Pellico finished the high school season on an offensive tear. It hasn't stopped during the summer.

Going into Thursday's game with Valencia, Pellico had struck out only five times in 53 at-bats.

``He came on real strong at the end of the year and he has just kept going,'' coach Doug Worley said. ``He's just been awesome.''

Valencia: No one expected big offensive numbers from Ryan Coe or Marty Mears this American Legion baseball season.

Coe, who will be a senior infielder at Valencia High School Valencia High School may refer to:

Mears finished a 1997 junior season at Valencia with only one hit in his last 23 at-bats.

However, Coe entered this week batting .366 for Valencia's legion team, and slugged a three-run homer with two out in the bottom of the seventh Saturday to lead his team to a dramatic 6-3 victory. He added a home run and two RBI the following day in a 9-8 come-from-behind win over Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. Mears' high school slump continued into the summer when he went 1 for his first 10, extending his slide to 2 for 33.

Mears' bat has been on fire lately, though.

He is 11 for his last 19 and improved his summer average to .414 for Valencia, which entered Thursday's game at Saugus with a 13-7 record.

Mears has two home runs and 10 RBI during his recent hot streak and entered Thursday with hits in six of his last seven at-bats.

``They've both been banging the ball really well lately,'' coach Pat Downs said.

All-star time: The District 20 All-Star game will be played Sunday at Valley College in Van Nuys. Game time is 1 p.m.
