Byline: Gary Traynham Special to the Daily News

Michael Kunes is keeping his options open. He can envision himself as a pitcher and hitter at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

, and the Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. Relying on his experience with the 1997 Legion state champions, Kunes pitched Valley Chatsworth Post 582 to a convincing 11-1 losers-bracket victory over Chino Post 299 Sunday in the state tournament at the California Veterans Home.

Kunes, unbeaten in four Legion decisions this season, spun a six-hitter and ripped three hits, including a three-run home run.

doubled and singled as Chatsworth (34-5) totaled 16 hits in the abbreviated seven-inning game. The outburst came a day after an opening 8-1 loss to reigning Northwest Regional champion Danville.

``I've talked to the (UCLA) hitting coach to see what kind of options I have,'' said Kunes, who has accepted a partial baseball scholarship from the Bruins.

``I'm concentrating on pitching and, if the opportunity comes, I'll make the most as a hitter. For sure, I'll get some pitching in.''

On Sunday, he surrendered five hits to the first eight batters but allowed only two runners thereafter.

Kunes has welcomed advice from former major-league pitcher Pete Redfern (a USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  alumnus ALUMNUS, civil law. A child which one has nursed; a foster child. Dig. 40, 2, 14. ), whose son Chad plays center field and had two hits.

``Coach Redfern has helped me a lot. He gives me a lot of pointers,'' said Kunes, who struck out 10 in this spring's City 4A championship victory over Poly.

He went 13-1 in high school as a senior and has been used sparingly by Legion manager Matt Lacour.

``Matt started off a little shaky,'' Lacour said, ``but he beared down and was really getting after it well.''

Kunes' home run, his fifth in Legion this season, came after a controversial rundown with two outs in the third inning. Redfern was tagged out between third base and home, but the first-base umpire ruled obstruction against catcher Joe Cortez Joe Cortez (born 1945 in New York, New York) is a Puerto Rican boxing referee who has worked many important world title bouts. . Redfern scored to break a 1-1 tie. Kenny then walked and Kunes lined a shot over the 323 sign in right field.

``That home run got us going,'' Lacour said. ``I told the guys we needed one big hit. Mike got it and we rolled after that.''

Chino cleanup batter Shaun Rasmussen, a first baseman involved in the Redfern rundown, disagreed with the call.

``The runner sidestepped our catcher,'' Rasmussen said. ``(Our catcher was definitely in the way. I don't think this (first-base) umpire can make the call. It cost us four runs. That was a long inning for our pitcher.''

Chino pitcher Chad Cordero Chad Patrick Cordero (born March 18, 1982 in Upland, California) is currently a right-handed relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Washington Nationals. He broke into the big league ranks with the MontrĂ©al Expos.  was tagged for 12 hits and seven runs in five innings.
