AMERICAN LEGION: CHATSWORTH POUNDED BY DANVILLE.

Byline: Gary Traynham Special to the Daily News

Valley Chatsworth Post 582 struggled through its longest afternoon of the baseball season in Saturday's American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  state tournament opener but was hardly discouraged.

The Area 6 champions were dealt an 8-1 thumping by 1998 Northwest Regional champion Danville and now must win three straight games to advance to the regionals.

``The last tournament we had to win three games in 24 hours, so pitching is not a concern,'' Chatsworth manager Matt Lacour said.

The team's seven hits against hard-throwing, 6-foot-4 Mateo Miramontes were a season-low. It was a stunning contrast to the same lineup's 17-7 romp over Poly at Dodger Stadium     [  in the highest-scoring City championship game this spring.

Miramontes (9-0) struck out 10, walked two and hit three in eight innings in his team's ninth straight win.

Two walks, Luke Cherry's double and successive errors led to Danville's three-run rally in the third inning.

Sellz gave up three hits and two walks in a two-run sixth and was lifted after a hit batsman, single and walk in the seventh. Overall, he gave up six hits and six runs.

``We played probably the poorest game of the year,'' Lacour said. ``We have to search real hard to find something we did well today.''

Miramontes allowed three of seven hits in the first inning before assuming command.

``L.A. puts out good teams,'' Miramontes said. ``They didn't get the breaks today.''

Danville manager Don Johns concurred. ``Any trip to the World Series is through L.A.,'' said Johns, who lost every position starter from the '98 team that placed third in the Legion World Series.

The third inning was typical of Chatsworth's problems. With the bases loaded and two outs, two successive errors led to two runs, breaking a 1-1 tie.

``When we got behind, we got scared,'' Chatsworth shortstop Matt Fisher said. ``We're not usually like that. Their pitching was pretty good, but we didn't play defense.''
