Rotation: RHP Roger Clemens, RHP David Cone, LHP Andy Pettitte, RHP Orlando Hernandez, RHP Hideki Irabu.

      Closer: RHP Mariano Rivera.

Hot Shot: Clemens brings five Cy Young Awards, including the last two, to New York New York, state, United States

in search of his first World Series title. He had 15 consecutive wins at one point last season.

Bottom Line: After adding Clemens to a team that won an AL-record 114 regular-season games and the World Series, anything less than a third World Series title in four years will be a disappointment.

Projected lineup: LF Shannon Stewart, 2B Homer Bush, RF Shawn Green, 1B Carlos Delgado, DH Cecil Fielder, 3B Tony Fernandez, CF Jose Cruz Jr., C Darrin Fletcher, SS Alex Gonzalez.

Rotation: LHP David Wells, RHP Pat Hentgen, RHP Joey Hamilton, RHP Kelvim Escobar, RHP Chris Carpenter.

      Closer: RHP Paul Quantrill.

Hot Shot: RHP Roy Halladay. On the final day of the '98 season, he came within an out of pitching a no-hitter against Detroit in his second big-league start. He turns 22 in May and will get a bigger chance this year.

Bottom Line: Even minus Clemens, there is playoff potential provided Wells is healthy and happy. Toronto may not be done trading, either - Hentgen is rumored in possible deal to the Angels for CF Jim Edmonds.

      BALTIMORE ORIOLES

      1998: 79-83, 4th place, 35 games behind.

      Manager: Ray Miller (second season).

He's Here: OF Albert Belle, 1B Will Clark, 2B Delino DeShields, C Charles Johnson, INF Rich Amaral, RHP Mike Timlin, RHP Ricky Bones, RHP Heathcliff Slocumb, RHP Mike Fetters.

Projected lineup: CF Brady Anderson, SS Mike Bordick, 1B Will Clark, RF Albert Belle, LF B.J. Surhoff, DH Harold Baines, 3B Cal Ripken, C Charles Johnson, 2B Delino DeShields.

Rotation: RHP Mike Mussina, RHP Juan Guzman, RHP Scott Erickson, RHP Scott Kamieniecki, RHP Sidney Ponson.

      Closer: RHP Mike Timlin.

Hot Shot: 3B-DH Willis Otanez could claim a spot on the 25-man roster because he's out of options and drove in 100 runs in Triple-A last year.

Bottom Line: Davis, Alomar, Key, Mussina, Kamieniecki and Baines all battled injuries in 1998, and there's no guarantee that the new over-30 crowd will be any healthier than last year's over-30 crowd.

BOSTON RED SOX The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox are a member and currently champions of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. From to the present, the Red Sox have played in Fenway Park.

      1998: 92-70, 2nd place, 22 games behind, wild-card.

      Manager: Jimy Williams (3rd season).

He's Here: DH-2B Jose Offerman, RHP Mark Portugal, RHP Pat Rapp, LHP Mark Guthrie, OF Jon Nunally.

He's Outta Here: 1B Mo Vaughn, RF Darren Bragg, RHP Dennis Eckersley, LHP Steve Avery, LHP Pete Schourek, LHP Butch Henry, LHP Greg Swindell, RHP Carlos Reyes.

Projected lineup: DH Jose Offerman, CF Darren Lewis, 3B John Valentin, SS Nomar Garciaparra, 1B Mike Stanley, LF Troy O'Leary, RF Trot Nixon, 2B Jeff Frye, C Scott Hatteberg.

Rotation: RHP Pedro Martinez, RHP Bret Saberhagen, RHP Tim Wakefield, RHP Mark Portugal, RHP Pat Rapp.

      Closer: RHP Tom Gordon.

Hot Shot: Nixon, Boston's first-round pick (seventh overall) in 1993, finally gets a shot at a starting job in right field.

Bottom Line: The additions of Portugal and Rapp and the expectation that Ramon Martinez will be ready by midseason following offseason shoulder surgery give the Red Sox solid veteran starting pitching that could help them contend for a wild-card spot. But Boston must replace the run production of Vaughn, who led them with 40 homers and a .337 average.

TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are a professional baseball team based in St. Petersburg, Florida, Florida. The Devil Rays are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Devil Rays have played in Tropicana Field.

      1998: 63-99, 5th place, 51 games behind.

      Manager: Larry Rothschild (second year)

He's Here: DH Jose Canseco, C Joe Oliver.

He's Outta Here: RHP Dennis Springer.

Projected lineup: CF Quinton McCracken, 2B Miguel Cairo, DH Jose Canseco, 1B Fred McGriff, 3B Wade Boggs, C John Flaherty, LF Mike Kelly, SS Kevin Stocker, RF Dave Martinez.

Rotation: RHP Rolando Arrojo, LHP Wilson Alvarez, LHP Tony Saunders, LHP Terrell Wade, RHP Jason Johnson, LHP Julio Santana.

      Closer: RHP Roberto Hernandez.

Hot Shot: Outfielder Randy Winn (.278, 9 triples, 26 SB in 109 G).

Bottom Line: Tampa Bay figures it should be better in 1999, mainly because its veteran players can't be much worse than they were in 1998. McGriff, Sorrento, Stocker, Flaherty and Alvarez all had the worst seasons of their careers. The Devil Rays signed Canseco (46 HRs, 107 RBI RBI

The only reason they didn't lose more games in their inaugural season was because of their solid pitching (fourth in the AL in ERA) and defense (second in fielding).
