AMERICAN LEAGUE AROUND THE HORN: BLUE JAYS PONDER FUTURE.

Byline: Matt McHale

The Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners are a member of the Western Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Mariners have played in Safeco Field.  aren't the only team worried about losing top players, with Ken Griffey Ken Griffey may refer to:

  • Ken Griffey, Jr. (born 1969), a current Major League Baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds
and Alex Rodriguez Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975 in New York, New York), commonly nicknamed A-Rod, is a Dominican American baseball infielder. He is the starting third baseman for the New York Yankees, after having played shortstop for the Texas Rangers and Seattle  eligible for free agency after the 2000 season.

Toronto, which has slipped out of the wild-card race, also has some hard decisions to make about its future.

The Blue Jays probably will have to dump pitchers David Wells This article is about David Wells, American baseball player. For other uses, see David Wells (disambiguation).

Green has 39 homers and 113 RBI, plus a .312 average.

But the club is uncertain about its pitching, with right-handers Joey Hamilton and Chris Carpenter gone because of arm problems.

As far as this season is concerned, Toronto is 9-1/2 out in the wild-card race and opens a series Tuesday against Boston. It is 1-9 against the Red Sox this year and 2-10 against Oakland, the other wild-card contender.

Woody steps down

Mariners GM Woody Woodward announced he will resign at the end of the season, avoiding the Griffey/Rodriguez mess. The feeling is that Seattle will re-sign Griffey but will have to trade Rodriguez. The talk is hurting the team now. On Sept. 2, the Mariners were on the fringe On The Fringe is a popular Pakistani television show on Indus Music. But even with back-to-back victories Thursday and Friday, Seattle is 7-1/2 games behind Oakland. A big reason is Rodriguez, who was batting .312 on Sept. 2. Now he is at .285 and obviously distracted by all the speculation. The Dodgers will make a serious pitch for him this winter. So will the New York Mets

Hot seat

Even though the Yankees appear to have righted themselves with four victories before Saturday's loss, 32-year-old general manager Brian Cashman is in danger of losing his job. That is not big news for someone who works for George Steinbrenner, but the Boss is upset Cashman did not block the Indians from acquiring Harold Baines. He also was angry that Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera beat the Yankees last year in salary arbitration.

Moving again

Paul Konerko, the Dodgers' one-time top prospect, had a breakthrough season with the Chicago White Sox The Chicago White Sox are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The White Sox are a member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the White Sox have played in U.S. , but after playing most of the year at first there is a good chance he will be at third next year. Greg Norton has 26 errors this season and Chicago is hoping to put promising Carlos Lee at first and make Frank Thomas the DH, even though he bombed there this year. The White Sox's top prospect, Joe Crede, is a third baseman, but he hasn't played above Double-A and was lost for the season after foot surgery in June.

Fassero out

Just two starts after he was acquired from Seattle, left-hander Jeff Fassero has worked himself out of the Texas Rangers' postseason rotation. He went 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, which would have earned most Rangers pitchers a contract extension.

But now, the club is leaning toward a rotation of Rick Helling, Aaron Sele, Esteban Loaiza and John Burkett for the playoffs.

Sele and Helling were involved in an incident this past week that concerns the Rangers. While playing catch in the outfield during Monday's batting practice, Helling inadvertently struck left fielder Rusty Greer in the left eye with a throw. Doctors said there was no damge to the retina or optic nerve optic nerve: see vision. , but he temporarily lost sight in the eye and has not played since. The club hopes to have him back Tuesday against Baltimore.
