``You can probably smell it on me,'' Staci Hicks, a New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E).  resident, told the Boston Globe. ``I hugged all of them.''

Indeed, the Sox's celebration of a wild-card berth was beyond boisterous. But they had good reason to believe Thursday's celebration won't be the last one this fall. That reason is the health and apparent return to dominance of Pedro Martinez, who could tip the balance of Boston's opening-round series against Oakland toward the Red Sox.

Martinez missed a month of the season with a strained muscle, yet rallied to lead the American League in ERA (2.22) and strikeouts (206, assuming Esteban Loaiza strikes out six or less today). More significantly, Martinez is sound enough that Boston manager Grady Little is kicking around the idea of starting Martinez on three days' rest against Oakland, pitching him in Game 1 on Wednesday and Game 4 on Sunday. Derek Lowe and Tim Wakefield will pitch Games 2 and 3 in one order or another.

The Sox have treated Martinez with kid gloves in recent years, so to even entertain the prospect of starting him on short rest is significant.

``I see a guy that's as healthy as he's ever been,'' Little said. ``He did have some sickness that threw him down a while back. Now I see a guy who's as healthy as he's been at this point in the season.''

If Martinez can get capable support from Lowe, Wakefield and possibly former Crespi High of Encino pitcher Jeff Suppan, the Sox might yet raise the bar again on debauchery Debauchery

``What I want to know,'' Millar (Hart High of Newhall) said, ``is who wrote the script for celebrations? Clinch wild card, no beers? Clinch Division Series, 4 to 9 beers? Clinch LCS LCS - Language for Communicating Systems , 6 to 9 beers? Win World Series? No limit?

``I never had more fun in my life, running down Yawkey Way in my spikes with Derek and Todd and heading into that tavern with a couple of thousand people behind us chanting, `Bring On Oakland!' We were there 10 minutes. I wish we could have stayed four hours.''

--White Sox manager: Jerry Manuel's fate has been sealed in Chicago - ``I'll rise again somewhere,'' he said this week - but the larger speculation on the South Side now centers on his replacement. The name causing the biggest stir was Tony La Russa, who could be a candidate for a second go-round there if the final year of his contract in St. Louis is not picked up.
