AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AIRWAYS AWARDED $19.2 MILLION U.S. POSTAL SERVICE CONTRACT FOR CHRISTMAS RUSH

YPSILANTI, Mich., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Postal Service awarded a $19.2 million contract to Ypsilanti-based American International Airways, Inc. (AIA) to provide air transportation and ground handling services primarily for second-day mail between 31 cities coast-to-coast during the 1993 Christmas rush, AIA announced today.
The contract contains a standard renewal clause, making the award worth a potential $96.1 million over five years if AIA performs satisfactorily, according to Patricia L. Donahue, AIA's assistant director of operations and project manager for the Postal Service contract.
AIA will handle the 13-day assignment out of a Blytheville, Ark., hub, in facilities leased from the Arkansas International Airport, formerly Eaker Air Force Base.
Thirty aircraft, including DC-8s, B-727s, DC-9s and a Lockheed Electra, will fly 40,837 statute miles per day, logging 1,300 air hours during the 13-day contract.
Over 200 temporary workers from the Blytheville area will be hired, Donahue said. AIA will also detail an additional 100 employees from its Ypsilanti base to the Blytheville hub for the Christmas rush period.
American International Airways, Inc. is one of seven privately held Kalitta Companies offering worldwide air cargo and passenger charter services to freight forwarders, shippers and specialized businesses.
