 AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS REPORTS RECORD SALES
 AND EARNINGS FOR THE FIRST QUARTER OF 1992
 NEW YORK, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- American Home Products Corporation (NYSE: AHP) today reported record sales and earnings for the first quarter of 1992.
 Net sales were $1,998,463,000 for the 1992 first quarter, 13 percent above year-ago levels. Income before taxes of $521,008,000 increased 14 percent while net income increased 15 percent to $406,269,000. Net income per share increased 15 percent from $1.12 to $1.29.
 John R. Stafford, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Results for the first quarter of 1992 reflect strong performances by the domestic pharmaceutical and consumer health care businesses. U.S. pharmaceutical sales increased 20 percent, led by the established female health care category and by the new products Lodine, for osteoarthritis, introduced in May 1991, and Norplant, for contraception, introduced in February 1991. U.S. consumer health care sales increased 24 percent, as the analgesic and cough/cold product lines benefited from a severe and prolonged cold and flu season."
 Net sales of health care products increased 15 percent worldwide in the 1992 first quarter. The following table illustrates results within this segment:
