AMERICAN GENERAL NAMES NEWTON SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL

 HOUSTON, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- American General Corporation (NYSE: AGC) today announced the election of Jon P. Newton to the position of senior vice president and general counsel, effective March 1, 1993. In this position, Newton will serve as the corporation's chief legal officer and have responsibility for the parent company's legal division as well as the coordination of subsidiary company legal activities.
 Newton, 51, joins American General from the Austin law firm of Clark, Thomas, Winters & Newton, where he was a partner since 1985. Newton was elected to three terms in the Texas House of Representatives from 1971 to 1976 and in 1977 was elected to the Texas Railroad Commission. Newton was also appointed by Governor Dolph Briscoe to the University of Texas System Board of Regents in 1979 and was chairman of the board from 1983 to 1985.
 Newton received his B.A. degree from the University of Texas in 1963 and his LL.B. degree from University of Texas School of Law in 1965. He and his wife, Betty Sue, will be relocating to Houston in March.
