AMERICAN FOREST RESOURCE ALLIANCE COMMENTS ON THE MARBLED MURRELET
PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was issued by Mark Rey, American Forest Resource Alliance (AFRA) executive director, today, praising the Bush administration for seeking and securing an emergency stay regarding the potential listing of the marbled murrelet:
"The Bush administration deserves strong and widespread praise for its courageous stand today against lawsuit-happy special-interest attorneys.
"The fight over the potential listing of the marbled murrelet once again underscores the president's correct assessment that the Endangered Species Act is seriously flawed, and that it needs to be upgraded to include both wildlife and job-protection considerations.
"Unfortunately, the act has become an addictive narcotic for the litigious environmental industry, which can't stop throwing up once species after another in front of one politically incorrect economic activity after another.
"And these same righteous zealots, who appear to champion science as an end all, are more than willing to jettison scientific considerations when they come in direct conflict with their political agenda.
"In this case, the administration has correctly asked for more time to determine whether the estimated population of up to 250,000 murrelets in Alaska should be factored into a potential listing decision.
"Why should private forestland owners and public timber dependent families be forced to suffer, if scientists determine that murrelets that are flourishing in other states are all part of a single population?
"The sad chapter in the act's history is just one more reminder that the law is not only flawed, but it is being seriously abused by environmental extremists who just can't get enough."
