 AMERICAN EXPLORATION COMPANY APPOINTS
 VICE PRESIDENT - PRODUCTION OPERATIONS
 HOUSTON, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- American Exploration Company (AMEX: AX) announced today that it had appointed Robert R. McBride, Jr. to the position of vice president - production operations.
 McBride brings to American many years of onshore and offshore operating experience in the U.S. and internationally. From 1988 to 1992, he was with British Gas plc, most recently as exploitation manager. In this capacity, McBride was responsible for development geology, geophysics and engineering involving all British Gas projects in South America and Africa. From 1977 to 1988, McBride held various production engineering and management positions with Tenneco Oil Company in the offshore Gulf of Mexico, Texas Gulf Coast and International Divisions. He holds a B.S. degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.
 In his new position, McBride will be based in Houston and be responsible for American's oil and gas production operations. He will also be actively involved in the generation and implementation of development projects and will coordinate American's international development activity. He will replace Steve Haines who has resigned from his position of vice president, U.S. operations effective Aug. 18.
 Commenting on the appointment, Mark Andrews, chairman and chief executive officer said, "I am pleased to welcome Bob McBride to our organization. His enthusiasm and energy coupled with his broad range of production and engineering experience will be a major asset to American. In addition, Bob's direct experience in Tunisia will be particularly helpful as we work with Texaco to jointly develop our recent oil discovery and expand exploratory activities on our 987,000 acre permit."
 American Exploration is an independent oil and gas company with production in the United States and Canada and exploratory activities in North America, Tunisia and the Sultanate of Oman.
