AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER'S JAMES MARKOWSKY RECEIVES COAL CONFERENCE AWARD FOR DEVELOPMENTS IN CLEAN COAL TECHNOLOGY

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pittsburgh Coal Conference has honored James J. Markowsky, executive vice president- engineering and construction of American Electric Power Service Corp. (NYSE: AEP), with the Pitt Award for Innovation in Coal Conversion.
The award, presented Sept. 22 at the anniversary banquet of the Pittsburgh Coal Conference, annually recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to new technologies, procedures and policies for coal utilization. Markowsky was recognized for his contributions to the development of pressurized fluidized bed combustion (PFBC) systems.
In accepting the award, Markowsky acknowledged enthusiastic support of PFBC by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Ohio Coal Development Office, which helped fund the Tidd PFBC Demonstration Plant at Brilliant, Ohio, owned by AEP subsidiary Ohio Power Company.
"This award belongs to the team of dedicated individuals involved in the project at American Electric Power, ABB Carbon and the Babcock & Wilcox Co.," Markowsky said. He called the Tidd PFBC project "a working model of how government and industry can cooperate to achieve a tangible benefit to the nation, electric utility industry and the customers we serve."
The annual Pittsburgh Coal Conference is sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering Center for Energy Research. The first of its kind in North America, Ohio Power Company's Tidd plant burns Ohio high-sulfur coal in combination with dolomite, a type of limestone. The dolomite captures sulfur dioxide during the combustion process, eliminating the need for flue-gas scrubbers that capture sulfur dioxide after combustion.
