Their own three kids were grown and busy embarking on their own careers. They couldn't help their parents out with the place anymore, so they ran a help-wanted ad in the Daily News - and Rose Vargas showed up. ``We need some help,'' Elise remembers saying to the young Puerto Rican Puer·to Ri·co Abbr. The Kueblers were at all the games for all the sports. ``They're wonderful, generous people, and it's good to see the My Hero tradition is going to be carried on with Rose, who is a great person,'' Cassidy said. They've had a lot of people over the years ask them to let them know when they were going to sell their sub shop because they wanted to buy it. ``But Howie and I always knew there was only one person who would run it and keep things the same,'' she said. So one day last July, she and Howie sat Rose down at the same table they'd hired her at 24 years earlier, and broke the news to their right arm that they were selling the place. ``To who?'' Rose said, giving them a worried look. ``To you, if you want it,'' Howie said. She wanted it, Rose said, calling up her daughter, Denise, and son-in- law, who helped her buy the shop. The way she sees it this Labor Day weekend 24 years later, she's a pretty lucky woman, Rose said, giving her old bosses a hug when they stopped by to visit at lunchtime. She didn't have much when she arrived in California in 1979, and answered that help-wanted ad from a small sub shop in Northridge. ``Now I own it,'' Rose said with a smile, slapping some mustard mustard, common name for the Cruciferae, a large family chiefly of herbs of north temperate regions.
