AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES BIG THREE TO ATTACH BUMPER PERFORMANCE LABELS ON CARS

WASHINGTON, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA) today announced that Chrysler, Ford and General Motors will begin attaching bumper performance labels on all passenger cars during the 1994 model year.
Thomas H. Hanna, president and CEO of the AAMA, said American-owned auto companies will supply this information voluntarily to provide consumers data to make informed purchasing decisions.
The labels will indicate the bumper's ability to withstand low-speed collisions. All new passenger cars meet or exceed the federal bumper standard.
"Continuous improvements in bumper designs in recent years, along with other factors, have resulted in a significant decline in insurance claims," Hanna noted. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), insurance collision claims in 1992 were approximately 18 percent fewer than in 1980.
Three states -- California, Hawaii and New York -- require bumper performance information on new passenger cars sold within those states. The new program will provide consumers in all states with similar information.
AAMA is the trade association for U.S. car and light truck manufacturers. Its members, Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C), Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM), produce approximately 81 percent of all U.S.-built motor vehicles.
