AMERICA WEST RECEIVES EXTENSION OF EXCLUSIVITY PERIOD

PHOENIX, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- America West Airlines (NASDAQ: AWAQC) announced that it has received an extension of the period within which the company has the exclusive right to file a plan of reorganization from Feb. 15 through June 15, 1993. The extension was issued at a hearing today in Phoenix by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Chief Judge Robert G. Mooreman.
America West's Senior Vice President and General Counsel Martin J. Whalen said, "It is commonplace to request several extensions in a case of this magnitude. Our fourth-quarter financial results indicate positive progress, and this extension of the exclusivity period allows us to develop an effective business plan for America West in the current and future competitive environment. We would be remiss in our obligations to our creditors, shareholders and employees if we were to pursue a quick fix.' The board of directors and management are committed to laying the foundation for a long-term solution."
America West has been operating under protection of Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code since June 27, 1991. This is the fifth extension of the period of exclusivity granted by the court.
