OXNARD - For Craige Specht, America West Express's inaugural shuttle flight Friday from Phoenix, Ariz., to Oxnard was nothing but a party.

He and about 20 other passengers got a send-off at the Phoenix airport that included a buffet, complete with chocolate-covered strawberries, a guitar player belting out tunes and gift bags of airline souvenirs.

``I was really surprised when I walked into the Phoenix terminal,'' said Specht, a 43-year-old construction superintendent from Ventura. ``It was upbeat, jumpy - kind of like a party. The service is perfect. It takes 1 1/2 hours from Phoenix to here. When you go through L.A., it usually takes four to five hours with the layover lay·o·ver

``This opens up a world of opportunity to the Oxnard travelers to connect throughout the country, Mexico and Canada,'' said Marc Kuffner, an America West analyst. ``It also allows travelers to avoid the traffic to get to LAX to connect.''

Beginning today, the shuttle service will offer daily flights leaving Oxnard at 6:53 a.m. and 2:59 p.m. and arriving in Phoenix at 9:31 a.m. and 5:37 p.m., respectively, airline officials said.

Flights will leave Phoenix at 11:54 a.m. and 7:46 p.m., arriving in Oxnard at 12:36 p.m. - as the inaugural flight did - and 8:28 p.m.

Ojai resident Sandy Duncan, one of a dozen people waiting for family and friends to arrive on the first flight, said she believes there is enough of a demand for the service to keep it financially afloat.

``(The county) is growing at a moderate enough pace to where this service is needed and will be supported,'' she said.
