AMERICA WEST AIRLINES EMPLOYEES REJECT MACHINISTS UNION EFFORT

PHOENIX, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- -- America West Airlines (NASDAQ: AWAQC) employees rejected a bid by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) to unionize the carrier's "mechanics and related employees." Of the 1,079 employees eligible to vote, 336 (31 percent) voted for IAM representation. The ballots were counted today at the National Mediation Board's (NMB) headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Michael J. Conway, president and chief executive officer for America West, said, "This vote sends a strong message to the airline industry and the traveling public that the spirit of America West's employees remains intact and robust, despite the challenges faced over the past two years." He continued, "This vote also displays the confidence of America West employees in representing themselves. In essence, they have seen the adversarial environment at many other airlines and told this union -- `We think we've found a better way.'"
Conway concluded, "This is not the first attempt, nor probably the last attempt, to unionize America West employees by national labor organizations. Each past attempt has failed, and we believe that our continued efforts to treat employees fairly, with dignity and with respect, will result in America West employees preference for self- representation."
