AMERICA ONLINE SURPASSES 300,000 SUBSCRIBER MARK; NEW, LOWER CONNECT RATES NOW IN EFFECT

VIENNA, Va., July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- America Online, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMER), announced today that it ended June (and its fiscal year) with more than 300,000 subscribers. This represents a 65 percent growth rate over the past year, making America Online the nation's fastest- growing consumer online service. Growth has been particularly strong in recent months; the company has added approximately 50,000 subscribers since mid-April.
"America Online is experiencing unprecedented subscriber growth," said Steve Case, president and CEO. "The success of our Windows service, launched in January, coupled with the acceptance of our new pricing, has created considerable momentum. We intend to capitalize on this momentum, to propel America Online into the forefront of the consumer online services business."
Subscriber growth has surged following America Online's announcement of new pricing in the spring. The new pricing provides subscribers with 5 hours of use each month for just $9.95; additional time is now just $3.50 per hour. With this simple and affordable pricing plan, America Online is now less than half the price of a comparable service offering from Prodigy.
