A FIRST FOR THE COMMERCIAL ONLINE SERVICES INDUSTRY
VIENNA, Va., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- America Online (NASDAQ: AMER), the nation's leading online source for software files and computing information, is offering members free access to selected software files and computer industry news in a special summer promotion.
"The Summer Software Madness promotion is our way of introducing consumers to the breadth and diversity of the America Online software and computing offerings," said Stephen M. Case, president. "By providing free access to these areas, we hope to make it appealing for people who have never used these sorts of services to learn about a whole array of interesting, new uses for their personal computer."
America Online subscribers using PC-compatible computers will have unlimited online time to explore and download a selection of the best public domain and shareware programs available -- games, utilities, business templates, graphics files and much more. The selection will change monthly so subscribers are encouraged to examine and experiment as much as they want and as often as they want -- at no charge.
In addition to free access to software files, America Online subscribers will also be able to enjoy:
-- Free use of the Newsbytes News Network -- the largest independent computer news service in the world, Dan Gutman's Technology Highlights, Networker's Journal, and technology news from USA Today.
-- Free help from the experts at the Software Help Desk who will personally answer questions about downloading software files and using America Online's software.
-- Free use of the PC Catalog, a searchable database of the best mail order products and prices.
America Online provides more than 20,000 software programs for subscribers. In addition, computing forums allow subscribers to interact and share ideas with each other on specific computing topics. Subscribers have a direct line to the experts from leading software and hardware companies who answer questions about their products, offer software upgrades and demos for download and post hints and tips. Monthly software conferences feature special guests and designers of top-selling software and hardware in "live" discussion settings. America Online's icon-based, windowing interface makes using the service easy and downloading software files quick and hassle-free.
In addition to the free Summer Software Madness area, a subscription to America Online includes free online time each month which members can use to explore and participate in any of the other numerous offerings including electronic mail, conferencing, news, sports, weather, stock quotes and online classes.
Summer Software Madness will continue through Aug. 31. Personal computer owners can request a free copy of the America Online software by calling 800-827-6364.
