For 15 years, we've sipped coffee together in the morning, talked about the news of the world -- from the gut-wrenching tales of war to the latest celebrity gossip -- and occasionally shared a family story.

We checked out her clothes, got catty cat·ty 1

about her ever-changing hairstyles -- then copied them -- and wished we had her legs. We smiled knowingly as her tummy expanded with her two pregnancies; we mourned with her when she was widowed far too soon.

But now our friend Katie is moving on. And for all the little stupid things that annoy us -- the perkiness perk·y

at 7 a.m., the way she interrupts her subjects, those occasional personal interjections -- we're proud of her.

She's one of us.

At 49, Katie Couric Katherine Anne "Katie" Couric (born January 7, 1957) is an American journalist who became well-known as co-host of NBC's Today. In 2006, she made a highly publicized move from NBC to CBS, and on September 5, 2006 she became the first woman to solo-anchor of the weekday  will be America's first-ever solo female evening news anchor on one of the ``Big 3'' networks, taking her place in TV news history with legends Walter Cronkite Walter Leland Cronkite, Jr. (born November 4 1916) is a retired iconic American broadcast journalist, best known as anchorman for The CBS Evening News for 19 years (1962–81). , Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw Thomas John Brokaw (born February 6, 1940 in Webster, South Dakota) is a popular American television journalist, Previously working on regularly scheduled news documentaries for the NBC television network, and is the former NBC News anchorman and managing editor of the program  and the late Peter Jennings.

She moves to ``The CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  Evening News'' next month, a less-than-bombshell announcement she made Wednesday morning on her 15th anniversary with NBC's ``Today.''

Katie (someone like Katie needs no last name) won the job on her terms. Her talent, her personality and those few faults combine to make her not only human, but a model of success that mixes feminism, femininity and feminine foibles. She blurred the lines for us, but by doing so gave them new definition.

Her rise is a victory for middle-age women -- working or not, married, single, rich or not-so. We can be pretty and funny and talk about our families, but still be taken seriously when we interview the pope, the president, the latest American hero American Hero may refer to:
  • American Hero (novel), written by Larry Beinhart
  • The Greatest American Hero
or the regular men, women and children who are the world tapestry.

We traveled the world with Katie. We saw Diana marry, produce heirs, divorce and die. We talked to world leaders, once donning a head scarf in respect. Presidents had plenty of time for us. Caroline and John Kennedy didn't talk to just anyone, but we got the scoop.

We went to war, we went to the Olympics, we crossed the globe to bury the legends of our time and to greet their successors.

After shots rang out at Columbine High School Columbine High School is a secondary school in unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado. The school is located at 6201 South Pierce Street, one mile west of the Littleton city limits and half a mile south of the Denver city/county line.  and the levees failed in New Orleans, Katie was there. We shared her confusion, shock and devastation when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

When Katie lost her 42-year-old husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer colon cancer, cancer of any part of the colon (often called the large intestine). Colon cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in the United States.  in 1998, she made the disease her cause. It took guts to talk about cameras going where no camera should ever go - but it took love, dignity and determination to take us with her to the lab that day in 2000, when she coaxed middle-age Americans into overcoming our embarrassment and getting an annual colonoscopy.

Similarly, we shared her mammogram mammogram /mam·mo·gram/ (mam´o-gram) a radiograph of the breast.

mam·mo·gram
n.
An x-ray image of the breast produced by mammography.
. Sure, it hurt a little at the moment of truth, but Katie's trepidation as she awaited results and her nervous crooked smile when things came out clear told us it wasn't so bad, that not getting the breast-cancer test could be a lot worse.

Like any friend, we got tired of Katie every once in a while. She hammed it up a bit too often for our sullen morning moods. She stuck herself in stories where news people don't belong. When she buddied up to JonBenet Ramsey's parents, it was too much. The rest of us still were casting a suspicious eye at the couple whose 6-year-old daughter was slain in their Colorado mansion.

But that's the way it is with friends. You get mad, you search for the remote and switch to CBS or ABC ABC
 in full American Broadcasting Co.

Major U.S. television network. It began when the expanding national radio network NBC split into the separate Red and Blue networks in 1928.
for a few mornings, you complain at work. Then you make up like nothing ever happened.

Think about it. Who can stay mad at Katie Couric?

She definitely made her mark, and it's going to be a while before we feel comfortable getting dressed in front of the new girl on our TV screens.Katie is going bigger-time, to a desk that had seen just suits and ties. Let's hope she keeps those blond highlights and the camera catches her legs and those great shoes every so often when she moves to the desk where no woman has sat before.

On Wednesday, Katie told us she felt like she knew us. We feel the same. We're going to miss her in the morning, even if she gets on our nerves once in a while. That's how it is with friends.
