AMERICA'S LEADING SNACK COMPANY LAUNCHES BAKED TOSTITOS -- A NEW LOW-FAT TORTILLA CHIP

PROPRIETARY BAKING PROCESS BAKES IN FLAVOR AND REDUCES FAT
PLANO, Texas, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Frito-Lay, Inc. announced today the introduction of Baked Tostitos brand Tortilla Chips -- low- fat, white corn tortilla chips available in varieties of less than one gram of fat and three grams of fat per serving. The company developed Baked Tostitos through an innovative process that bakes in the wholesome corn flavor but at reduced fat levels. Baked Tostitos contain up to 85 percent less fat than traditional tortilla chips.
Today, nearly 70 percent of adults consume low-or reduced-fat foods and beverages. The tradeoff for consumers, however, has been taste. Baked Tostitos offer what today's health-conscious snackers are looking for -- lower fat and good taste.
"Until now, the salty snack category hasn't truly offered a better- for-you snack that tastes this good," said Tom Kuthy, director of new products at Frito-Lay. "With Baked Tostitos, we've discovered a breakthrough process for tortilla chips that bakes in flavor, not fat."
Baked Tostitos are available in four versions and testing in the following markets:
Baked Tostitos Fat Content Per Serving Test Markets
Original Less than one gram Phoenix, Tuscon
 Original Three grams Seattle, Portland
Unsalted Less than one gram Phoenix, Tuscon
Cool Ranch Three grams Phoenix, Tucson,
 Seattle, Portland
"Baked Tostitos are not for the health food fanatic, but for health- conscious snackers who want a low-fat snack that tastes good," said Kuthy. "The Baked Tostitos test market will give us a better understanding of the consumer tradeoff between low-fat snacks and taste. That's why we're testing the different fat contents of Baked Tostitos."
Baked Tostitos are an extension of Frito-Lay's Tostitos brand, which continues to drive the unflavored tortilla chip category to new heights in sales as the category approaches the $1 billion mark. Baked Tostitos Original with one gram of fat contains 85 percent less fat than Tostitos brand Tortilla Chips, which contains eight grams of fat per serving.
Baked Tostitos are packaged in clear 10-ounce bags with a burst touting its low-fat attributes. The product test will be supported with a 30-second television commercial in Phoenix and Portland only, promotions with base Tostitos brand, coupons, in-store sampling and local community and sporting events. The 30-second commercial, titled "Get Baked," was created and produced by DDB Needham/Chicago.
Frito-Lay is the U.S. snack food division of PepsiCo, Inc. and the country's largest snack company, registering $4 billion in sales in 1992. Eight of the company's brands are among the 10 largest-selling brands in the U.S. and the company holds approximately half the share of the entire U.S. snack chip industry.
