AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, www.amd.com) A major manufacturer of semiconductor devices including x86-compatible CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips. , a founding member of the Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HomePNA), today announced it will deliver single-chip, low-cost silicon implementations based on the Alliance's initial 1Mbps specification for telephone wire networking.

Production samples will be available for integration onto motherboards, circuit boards, network interface cards and other consumer electronics devices during the fourth quarter.

The HomePNA is a consortium of the leading computing and communications companies working together to ensure the adoption of a single, unified phone line networking standard. The HomePNA has adopted a robust technology based on existing Ethernet standards to support the use of telephone wiring See twisted pair.  to network computers, peripherals and digital devices throughout the home.

"AMD is committed to helping the HomePNA drive industry standards for phone line networks capable of meeting the growing requirement within the home for easily deployed networking capabilities," said Tom Eby, Group Vice President of AMD's Communications Group. "AMD has a long and successful history of designing, manufacturing and marketing Ethernet-based networking products, including the introduction of the industry's first single-chip Ethernet device. Leveraging this breadth of knowledge and experience provides AMD with the ability to help quickly deliver cost-effective HomePNA compliant networking systems to our customers."

"The founding members of the HomePNA provide every piece of the puzzle required to quickly make inexpensive home networking a reality for consumers," said Mark A. Carpenter, Director, Internet and Home Networking, Compaq Computer Corp. "For the HomePNA to be successful, companies like AMD must aggressively develop single-chip solutions enabling low-cost silicon implementations of the HomePNA specification. Traditionally, AMD has demonstrated the design and manufacturing expertise required to embed HomePNA capabilities onto a single piece of silicon."

About the HomePNA
