AMD also announced the availability of two additional development support resources--a beta x86-64 Linux distribution The Linux operating system packaged for customers for a fee. It includes the Linux kernel, essential operating system components from the GNU Project, an installation program, various open source utilities and applications, documentation and technical support.  and the AMD x86-64 Architecture Programmer's Manual.

"AMD provides the resources and support developers need to optimize powerful 64-bit applications for upcoming products based on Hammer technology," said Richard Heye, AMD's vice president of Platform Engineering and Infrastructure, Computation Products Group. "With formal development resources in place, AMD's software and hardware partners are empowered to create 32-bit and 64-bit applications and drivers for the x86-64 platform."

The AMD Developer Center offers AMD partners code and development platform services, either directly at the center in Sunnyvale, California Sunnyvale ([sʌniveil]) is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. It allows consultation with AMD 64-bit code experts, helping partners to accelerate their development and validation of products for the upcoming AMD processors based on Hammer technology.

AMD also made SuSE's beta x86-64 Linux distribution available to more than 150 AMD partners that are currently working with AMD Opteron processor-based development platforms. Using this Linux beta distribution Not to be confused with Beta function.

, AMD partners can create Linux-compatible x86-64 applications. The commercial availability of SuSE x86-64 Linux distribution is expected to coincide with the first shipments of AMD Athlon processors based on Hammer technology.

"SuSE is committed to delivering stable, manageable enterprise solutions to our customers," said Markus Rex, SuSE Linux A Linux distribution from the SuSE Linux division of Novell. Both consumer and enterprise versions are available, and the distribution includes several user interfaces. SuSE Linux comes with the Yet Another Setup Tool (YaST), which is used to install, configure and maintain the OS, as  vice president of engineering. "We believe that 64-bit computing will thrive on x86-64 technology-based platforms. SuSE is first to provide a beta Linux distribution and allow AMD's partners to fully recognize the benefit of 64-bit Linux on x86-64."

AMD x86-64 Architecture Programmer's Manual is a five-volume guide designed to help software developers optimize applications for AMD's x86-64 microprocessor architecture. AMD's x86-64 architecture extends x86, the industry's most widely supported instruction set, and is designed to enable 64-bit computing while remaining compatible with existing 32-bit software infrastructure and industry experience. The manual can assist software developers writing application programs, compilers, assemblers, operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics.
