AMD and Sony Win MITI Minister's Award for Cordless Phone Chip.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--JULY 19, 1995--Advanced Micro Devices announced today it received the 1995 MITI MITI - SQRIBE  Minister's Award along with Sony Corporation for the companies' joint development of a single-chip solution for digital cordless telephones A cordless telephone or portable telephone is a telephone with a wireless handset which communicates via radio waves with a base station connected to a fixed telephone line (POTS) and can only be operated near (typically within 100 meters or 328 ft from) its base station .

The award from MITI, Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (通商産業省 Tsūsho-sangyō-shō or MITI) was one of the most powerful agencies in the Japanese government. , was begun in 1993 and annually recognizes the importance of design-in activities with the aim of promoting sales of foreign-based semiconductors in the Japanese market. Entries for this competition were submitted in late 1994. AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, www.amd.com) A major manufacturer of semiconductor devices including x86-compatible CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips.  and Sony were selected from a field of 14 finalists.

The chip, AMD's CT2 PhoX digital cordless baseband controller (Am79C410), creates the opportunity for new cordless telephone products that offer business and residential users greater portability, lower power consumption, lower cost and superior sound quality. Because of its high integration, the CT2 PhoX controller replaces up to five components used in existing CT2 systems. When combined with an RF (radio frequency) front end, this chip offers manufacturers a complete CT2 system with minimal engineering effort and fast time to market. Development on this project started in 1992 and was completed in 1994 after model cooperation by engineers from both companies.

"Collaboration among everyone involved in this project made it possible for AMD to complete this rather hard product designing activity and for Sony to finish an aggressive product," said Kazuo Sakai, president of AMD Japan. "We will try our best to support our customers and hope to keep winning this type of rewarding design-in."
