Systems featuring the AMD Athlon XP A family of Pentium-compatible CPU chips from AMD introduced in 2001. Departing from the traditional MHz designation, Athlon XP chips use model numbers that combine clock speed and architectural features into a numerical rating.  processor 2000+ are expected to be immediately available from Compaq in the U.S. Other top-tier manufacturers, including Hewlett-Packard Company and MicronPC, LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol.

in the U.S., and NEC-CI in Europe, also plan to offer systems soon with the AMD Athlon XP processor 2000+.

"With the AMD Athlon XP processor 2000+, AMD is making a New Year's resolution A New Year's Resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. The name comes from the fact that these commitments normally go into effect on New Year's Day and remain until the set  to PC users - to continue providing them the best performing products," said Ed Ellett, vice president of marketing for AMD's Computation Products Group. "AMD is determined to provide users with the right solutions at the right time, as when we championed the introduction of a DDR (Double Data Rate) Refers to an SDRAM memory chip that increases performance by doubling the effective data rate of the frontside bus. Home and business consumers benefit from AMD's innovations by experiencing improved software performance. As a result of AMD's close collaboration with Microsoft, the AMD Athlon XP processor is optimized for use with Windows(R) XP.

AMD recognizes the importance of delivered PC performance, based upon industry-standard benchmarks. These benchmarks demonstrate that AMD maintains performance leadership with the AMD Athlon XP processor 2000+. AMD identified the AMD Athlon XP processor using model numbers, as opposed to clock speed in megahertz One million cycles per second. See MHz.

MegaHertz - (MHz) Millions of cycles per second. The unit of frequency used to measure the clock rate of modern digital logic, including microprocessors.
. Model numbers are designed to convey the relative performance of AMD Athlon XP processors, as well as communicate the architectural superiority compared to existing AMD Athlon processors. The higher the model number, the better the performance.

To communicate processor performance in the future, AMD is driving the True Performance Initiative, or TPI (Tracks Per Inch) The measurement of the density of the storage channels on a disk or tape. Track density on magnetic disks has reached 125,000 tpi (125 Ktpi). See bpi, areal density and magnetic disk. . TPI is intended to define a new, more accurate measure of processor performance and assist customers in understanding the benefits of PC performance.

"We've seen an incredible response to AMD's ongoing efforts to expose the megahertz myth The megahertz myth, or less commonly the gigahertz myth, refers to the error of using clock rate to compare the performance of different microprocessors. While clock rates are a valid way of comparing the performance of different speeds of the same model and type of . A healthy dialogue is occurring industry wide, and there is a resounding re·sound

Computer Manufacturers Offer Support

"For an unsurpassed digital media experience, office productivity, and gaming action, our Compaq Presario 8000Z series with the AMD Athlon XP processor 2000+ is a surefire win," said Brett Faulk, director of Home and Small Office Desktop Marketing in Compaq Computer Corporation's Access Business Group. "AMD continues to supply products that help us meet the high standards of our home and small business customers."

"The new AMD Athlon XP processor 2000+ is available on HP's build-to-order program, which enables people to customize their HP Pavilion PC with the highest performance features," said Bruce Greenwood, product marketing manager for HP Pavilion home PCs. "The ability to choose specific components allows a user to build a PC with a specific purpose in mind, like creating and editing personal photos, music and movies, and then select high performance technology that meets their individual needs."

"NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
CI is proud to bring this latest processor technology to our customers," said Detlef Bosse, Executive Director Desktop and Solutions, NEC Computers International. "It delivers highest performance at a mainstream price, which is just the kind of value and time-to-market that consumers, and Small and Medium Enterprise power users, have come to expect from our Packard Bell and NEC desktops."
