About the AMD Athlon(TM) XP Processor

The AMD Athlon XP processor features QuantiSpeed architecture, 384KB of on-chip, full-speed cache, and support for AMD's 3DNow!(TM) Professional instructions for enhanced multimedia capabilities. The AMD Athlon XP processor is compatible with AMD's Socket A The motherboard receptacle for Duron and newer Athlon CPU chips from AMD. It uses a 462-pin PGA package. See Slot A.  infrastructure, and supports the advanced 266MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  front-side bus. AMD Athlon XP processors are manufactured using AMD's 0.18-micron copper process technology in Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany.

About the AMD Athlon(TM) MP Processor

The AMD Athlon MP processor is a seventh-generation x86 processor designed for high-performance multiprocessing servers and workstations.

A key advantage of AMD's multiprocessing platform is Smart MP technology, which greatly enhances overall platform performance by increasing data movement between the two CPUs, chipset and memory system. Smart MP technology features dual point-to-point, high-speed 266MHz system buses with Error Correcting Code (ECC (1) (Error-Correcting Code) A type of memory that corrects errors on the fly. See ECC memory.

(2) (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) A public key cryptography method that provides fast decryption and digital signature processing.

of bus bandwidth in a dual-processor system. Smart MP technology also has an optimized Modified Owner Exclusive Shared Invalid (MOESI MOESI Modified Owner Exclusive Shared Invalid ) cache coherency Managing a cache so that data are not lost or overwritten. For example, when data are updated in a cache, but not yet transferred to its target memory or disk, the chance of corruption is greater. Cache coherency is obtained by well-designed algorithms that keep track of the cache.  protocol that manages data and memory traffic in a multiprocessing environment.

The AMD Athlon MP processor features the patented QuantiSpeed(TM) architecture, which includes a high performance full-speed cache with hardware data pre-fetch, a fully pipelined superscalar A CPU architecture that allows more than one instruction to be executed in one clock cycle. See pipeline processing.

A TLB is used in conjunction with a cache whose tags are based on virtual addresses.  (TLB TLB - Translation Look-aside Buffer ). The processor also incorporates 3DNow!(TM) Professional technology, which has 51 new instructions that extend AMD's 3DNow! technology, enabling smoother, richer and more lifelike images, more precise digital audio and an enriched Internet experience.

The AMD Athlon MP processor is compatible with AMD's stable Socket A infrastructure, and supports DDR (Double Data Rate) Refers to an SDRAM memory chip that increases performance by doubling the effective data rate of the frontside bus. For more details, see SDRAM.
