AMD Executive Hector Ruiz to Receive Morgan Stanley Leadership Award; Ruiz to Be Honored at Computerworld Honors Gala Awards Evening in Washington, D.C.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Technology industry leader, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AMD, Hector de J. Ruiz, Ph.D., is being recognized for his critical contribution toward the effective use of information technology throughout the world. He will receive The Morgan Stanley Leadership Award for Global Commerce at the Computerworld Honors Gala Awards evening, June 5 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.

Ruiz was selected by a Morgan Stanley nominating committee of executives from companies such as Microsoft, MetLife, Red Hat, VeriSign, and iVillage. In an interview for the Computerworld Honors Global Archives, Ruiz said leadership requires integrity "so that employees and customers trust you and they know you will always tell them the truth." IT leadership, he explained, "is being able to really think, am I changing the rules of the game, or am I just focused on a very linear view of where the world has been for many years."

For three decades Ruiz has been a leader in the semiconductor industry at Texas Instruments, Motorola, and now AMD. He believes that technology has the "capability of bringing to people knowledge and education that might be difficult to be brought to them in any other way." To that end, in 2004, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he announced AMD's 50 x 15 initiative to provide 50 percent of the world's population with basic Internet access by 2015.

The Morgan Stanley Leadership Award was established in 1999 and has been bestowed each year as part of the Computerworld Honors Program where 10 organizations will receive the prestigious 21st Century Achievement Awards for their use of technology that benefits society.

For the Computerworld Honors Program, Morgan Stanley nominated Axiom Software Laboratories, Inc.; Constant Contact; Core Security Technologies; DemandTec, Inc.; Freightquote.com; Perceptive Software, Inc.; PKWARE, Inc.; Salesforce.com; Savi Technology; Sirius Satellite Radio, Inc.; UPEK, Inc.; VMware, Inc.; Webroot Software, Inc. Their case studies have been added to the Global Archives of the Computerworld Honors Foundation.

In addition, at the June 5 gala, Linda M. Dillman, executive vice president, Risk Management and Benefits Administration, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., will be honored with the 2006 EMC Information Leadership award.
