CES 2000

Booth No. 6653

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 2000

KryoTech, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, www.amd.com) A major manufacturer of semiconductor devices including x86-compatible CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips.  and Compaq Computer Corp. today demonstrated a 1 Gigahertz (1000Mhz) Compaq Presario Presario is a series of desktop computers and notebooks from Compaq. The Presario family of computers was launched for the consumer marketplace in September 1993. Although HP has since acquired Compaq, the Presario name was not discontinued due to its marketability.  Internet PC See network computer and Internet appliance.  powered by the AMD Athlon(TM) processor and KryoTech SuperG(TM) technology.

The Presario PC features innovative technology that enables the system to reach the 1 GHz mark and offers leading edge system performance. The demonstration is being held at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the Digital Living Room, North Hall, at Compaq's Booth No. 6653.

The 1GHz Compaq Presario PC demonstration is based on KryoTech's SuperG technology, a "super-cooled" computer featuring an AMD Athlon processor. To achieve this speed, KryoTech's patented cooling system cooling system: see air conditioning; internal-combustion engine; refrigeration.

"By combining a powerful AMD Athlon processor with KryoTech's patented cooling system, Compaq is able to be the first major computer manufacturer in the world to publicly demonstrate a 1GHz system," said Mark Vena, Director, Consumer Desktop Product Marketing, Compaq Computer Corporation (company) Compaq Computer Corporation - The largest US manufacturer and vendor of IBM PC compatible personal computers and servers. Compaq was started in 1982 by three ex-Texas Instruments employees.

"The combination of the super cool KryoTech SuperG technology with the lightning fast AMD Athlon processor allows Compaq to demonstrate the technology of tomorrow today," said Dana Krelle, vice president of Marketing for AMD's Computation Products Group.

The 1 GHz Compaq Presario system is based on KryoTech's SuperG technology and demonstrates leading-edge integer, floating point, 3D and multimedia performance. The system also provides the extensive bus bandwidth that will be required for next-generation applications, including: Internet and e-commerce, digital content creation The development of newsworthy, educational and entertainment material for distribution over the Internet or other electronic media. About the AMD Athlon(TM) Processor

The AMD Athlon processor is an x86-compatible, seventh-generation design featuring a superpipelined, nine-issue superscalar A CPU architecture that allows more than one instruction to be executed in one clock cycle. See pipeline processing.

(architecture) superscalar - A superscalar architecture is a uniprocessor that can execute two or more scalar operations in parallel.
microarchitecture optimized for high clock frequency; the industry's first fully pipelined, superscalar floating point unit for x86 platforms; high-performance cache technology, including 128KB of on-chip level (L1) cache and a programmable, high-performance backside L2 cache interface; enhanced 3DNow!(TM) technology with 24 additional instructions A charge given to a jury by a judge after the original instructions to explain the law and guide the jury in its decision making.

Additional instructions are frequently needed after the jury has begun deliberations and finds that it has a question concerning the evidence, a
designed to improve integer math calculations, data movement for Internet streaming, and DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  communications; and the AMD Athlon system bus -- a 200MHz system interface based on the Alpha(TM) EV6 bus protocol with support for scalable multiprocessing.

All new AMD Athlon processors are manufactured on AMD's aluminum 0.18-micron process technology in Fab 25 in Austin, Texas. The AMD Athlon processor has received 18 industry awards since its introduction last year.
