High-performance, low-power, highly integrated processor scores

excellent marks on EEMBC's five application-based benchmark suites

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) today announced the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC EEMBC EDN Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (Electronic Design News Magazine) ) has published certified benchmark scores for the AMD Alchemy(TM) Solutions Au1100(TM) processor for all five of EEMBC's application-based benchmark suites.

Supported by members including AMD and more than 50 other leading processor and compiler companies, EEMBC benchmarks have become an industry standard for evaluating the capabilities of embedded processors and compilers according to objective, clearly defined criteria. Scores for the Au1100 processor have been verified by the independent EEMBC Certification Labs (ECL (Emitter-Coupled Logic) A digital circuit composed of bipolar transistors in which the emitter ends are wired together. ECL gates switch faster than TTL gates, but consume more power. See TTL, I2L and bipolar.

) to certify that they are repeatable and obtained according to EEMBC rules.

Providing a high-performance, low-power, highly integrated solution, the Au1100 processor addresses the needs of computing devices such as Web Pads, telematics, PDAs, and multimedia handheld computing devices. The processor also enables smaller form factors, shorter design cycles and simpler designs at multiple price-performance points.

The Au1100 processor running at a core operating frequency of 396MHz and using the Green Hills Software MULTI MULTI Multiple  compiler, received the following consolidated Out-of-the-box EEMBC v1.1 scores:

Automark 144.4

Consumermark 24.8

Netmark 5.1

OAmark 311.8

Telemark 5.1

"These certified EEMBC benchmark scores have allowed AMD to credibly demonstrate the performance benefits of its Au1100 processor, which are particularly impressive given the device's low-power consumption," said Markus Levy, EEMBC president. "Furthermore, the workloads delivered by the EEMBC benchmarks are an excellent tool for performing internal architecture validations that will ultimately benefit AMD's customers."

"Based on the EEMBC results and other data, and depending upon the particular benchmark suite, we believe the Au1100 processor's performance is 5 to 35 percent higher than competitive, low-power integrated system-on-a-chip (SOC) processors," said Phil Pompa, vice president of marketing for AMD's Personal Connectivity Solutions group. "Also, the processor's typical power consumption is up to 40% lower than published typical values from the competition. With improved power and integration, our customers are able to enjoy performance, power and system cost options not previously available. We are extremely pleased with the bar that has been set."

EEMBC benchmarks offer designers an opportunity to compare device performance in specific applications according to objective, real-world criteria to best select the right embedded processors for their systems.
