McDATA storage network ensuring constant availability to protect

wafer production

McDATA Corporation (Nasdaq:MCDTA)(Nasdaq:MCDT MCDT Micro Credit Development Trust SACCO (Uganda microfinance)
MCDT Microsoft Certified Desktop Technician
), the expert provider of multi-capable storage networking solutions, announced today that it has implemented four storage area networks (SANs) at AMD's microprocessor wafer manufacturing facility in Dresden, Germany.

AMD's $2.4 billion plant produces about 5,000 wafers per week. AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, www.amd.com) A major manufacturer of semiconductor devices including x86-compatible CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips.  selected McDATA's ultra-high availability Intrepid 6000 Series Directors to protect against costly chip production outages that could result in millions of euros in damages. The company's IT staff phased in the four fabrics taking great care to deploy inherently redundant devices and connections to ensure there were no single points of failure.

"We wanted an easy-to-manage SAN that delivers the highest availability we could find, and that's what we got," said Dr. Steffen Steidten, AMD, Dresden IT systems engineer. "The McDATA Intrepid Directors are easy to use and have exceeded our availability expectations. That's really important to us considering the prohibitive costs of downtime in our manufacturing environment."

In addition to meeting stringent availability standards, AMD's new SANs have substantially simplified the scalability of their fabrics to meet current and future needs. The new topology replaces an inflexible direct-attached storage Direct-attached storage (DAS) refers to a digital storage system directly attached to a server or workstation, without a storage network in between. It is a retronym, mainly used to differentiate non-networked storage from SAN and NAS.  architecture previously deployed.

"Besides very high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue. , we selected McDATA's Intrepid Director because it is easy to manage and has a high port density count," Steidten said. "They can be configured and scaled very quickly and we don't have to constantly monitor them."

A third major consideration was seamless interoperability with legacy devices. Recalled Steidten, "Interoperability was a decisive factor Noun 1. decisive factor - a point or fact or remark that settles something conclusively

causal factor, determinant, determining factor, determinative, determiner - a determining or causal element or factor; "education is an important determinant of
in selecting the Intrepid Directors. We needed to be assured that all the devices would work together."

"The world's leading technology companies chose McDATA because of our commitment to high-availability, flexibility, and maximizing IT resources," said Georg Bartz, managing director of International Sales for McDATA. "By providing easy-to-manage, interoperable SANs that enable data to be constantly available, we help our customers ensure their businesses are secure and successful."
