Integrated circuit integrated circuit (IC), electronic circuit built on a semiconductor substrate, usually one of single-crystal silicon. The circuit, often called a chip, is packaged in a hermetically sealed case or a nonhermetic plastic capsule, with leads extending from it for  developer AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, www.amd.com) A major manufacturer of semiconductor devices including x86-compatible CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips.  has revealed its new processor, codenamed Hammer.

The 64-bit Hammer processor is based on AMD's x86-64 technology and is designed to deliver enhanced performance on both 64-bit and 32-bit software. Also featured in the new processor will be an integrated DDR (Double Data Rate) Refers to an SDRAM memory chip that increases performance by doubling the effective data rate of the frontside bus. For more details, see SDRAM.

, reducing bottlenecks and speeding the flow of information through a PC.

According to the company, the Hammer processor is aimed at providing consumers with a smooth migration path to 64-bit software.

First shipments of the initial version of the Hammer family of processors are scheduled for the end of 2002.
